Beth Fantaskey Release Date: February 1st, Format: September 14th, Finished Reading: October 13th, Summary supplied from GoodReads: Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: Here I was when I picked up the novel thought that it was going to unveil the story of a girl that dates a vampire…on the contrary…its actually about a girl who, at first, tries to deny her destiny, and then later chooses to pursue it. In fact…the title of the book is very misleading… The story and plot were not that bad in all honesty. I found that the story felt more like verbal diarrhea at times, and not like an actual story. Almost like the author was just throwing words onto a piece of paper. There were several scenes that at times I were elaborated more on, or expanded upon.

She has no clue what is in store for her when she heads out for her first day of school. She notices that a tall, dark, mysterious, yet handsome guy is staring at her while she is waiting for the bus.
Shockingly, he never gets on the bus and ends up at her school. He’s the new foreign exchange student, Lucius, and he has come to Lancaster, Pennsylvania all the way from Romania. He ends up telling Jessica that she is actually a vampire princess as her birth parents come from a very important royal vampire family and were unfortunately killed. Jessica is in a state of disbelief. Although she is aware that she is adopted, she doesn’t believe in vampires or anything irrational and has hard time accepting Lucius’ claims.
And on top of that news, he says that as children they were betrothed with hopes that the two opposing families would join together; therefore, avoiding a war. Lucius tries and court Jessica using all of his European flair and etiquette; however, she is extremely resistant and wants a more normal life.

Get this from a library! Jessica’s guide to dating on the dark side. [Beth Fantaskey; Katherine Kellgren; Jeff Woodman] — Seventeen-year-old Jessica, adopted and raised in Pennsylvania, learns that she is descended from a royal line of Romanian vampires and that she .
Or so she thinks, because Jess originally came from Romania, given to her adoptive parents by her own parents when they were about to be killed by torch-wielding peasants. The Packwoods saved her from the mob and took her back to America to raise her. But while raising her, they told her about her past, in fairly general terms. But when a strange teenaged boy shows up at her bus stop and calls to her from across the street, he uses her original Romanian name, Antanasia. His name is Lucius Vladescue, and Jessica gets more and more creeped out by the way he stares at her and intimates that she should know him somehow.
She’s even more creeped out that her best friend, Melinda, seems to think that he’s hot, but when she complains about him to her mother, Jessica must swallow a bitter pill. She learns the truth about her birth parents:
Enter a bizarre new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu who claims Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth and he’s her long-lost fiance. He’s arrogant, officious, embarrassingly overprotective, and, well, incredibly hot. Determined to think Lucius is crazy as well as charming, arrogant, attractive and, yes, dangerous, Jessica refuses to let him have his way even if he does seem to have her parents on his side. Fact is, when we like something we always want more of it. The premise is fairly straight-forward: Nearly two decades of peace amongst vampires later, Jessica and Lucius must marry after her 18th birthday to seal the pact and prevent war from returning — after all, the vampires are a vicious, blood-thirsty lot, going by the scars Lucius sports from being educated by his uncle, Vasile.
I can buy that. There are a few quirks on the vampire myth — sunlight is no problem, they can eat regular human food as well, female vampires must be bitten by a male vampire to become a fully-fledged vampire, otherwise that side of their nature remains dormant — hence why Jessica had no idea what she was. Jessica narrates and does a passable job. I wanted her to lighten up. His character grows, develops, shifts, rebels, reverts — goes through all the phases of adolescence in just a few months, all thanks to the American influence.
We learn how he thinks through his letters to his uncle, which reveal his incredibly dry, quirky sense of humour that had me laughing out loud more than once. Not quite sure what he saw in her, either.
Jessica is just a normal teenager who is a senior in high school with the usual normal teenage problems: That is until the weird Romanian exchange student shows up and turns her life upside down. Now, she has been informed from Lucius, the dark and mysterious Romanian stranger, she is a supposed Romanian Princess and he is her betrothed. Oh, did I mention they both are vampires and they have to get married due to a 17 year old pact?

In rural Pennsylvania, math nerd Jessica Packwood is about to enter her senior year of high school, determined to have a good time, potentially date Jake Zinn, a nice and handsome boy in her grade, and win some more math competitions. But her carefully imagined plan goes down the drain with the arrival of Lucius Vladescu, a hot but arrogant student from Romania who is under the unfortunate delusion that he is a vampire prince destined to marry Jessica, who is apparently a vampire princess from a rival vampire family.
Their marriage would end a centuries-long war between the two families and ensure peace for all their vampire relatives. But just as she begins to finally believe—in Lucius, in herself—Lucius suddenly begins to court Faith Crosse, the evil-souled reigning cheerleader-slash-prom-queen of Woodrow Wilson High, and Jessica finds herself struggling to win him back, and not just for the sake of her own heart.
It is almost unfortunate that this book has such an unwieldy and frothy, though eye-catching, title, because I did not realize the extent of what I was in for when I started reading. Jessica and Lucius are two of the best main characters that I have read about in a long time: The relationship that develops between Jessica and Lucius seems totally natural, the growing love not forced. The plot goes beyond a typical Twilight spinoff which all current YA vampire novels are inevitably being compared to , and reaches its awe-inspiring conclusion wonderfully.
My one complaint is minor, and that is that I felt like most of the minor characters were not developed enough. I am wholeheartedly a fan, and you will be too.

I was pleasantly surprised because I enjoyed it– there were enough twists on the vampire legend that I was pleased. Jessica lives a quiet life as a mathlete and farm girl in Pennsylvania. Her parents have failed to tell her the details of her adoption from Romania, until Lucius, a vampire prince who is her betrothed, shows up. Jessica is adamant that she is not going to run off and be married so that she can be a vampire princess, but she does start to like Lucius.
She also starts to realize that vampires are not terribly nice. I thought that, while I liked this, readers who prefer vampire stories would not appreciate the satirical take, but other bloggers seemed to react favorably to this one. Ordering two copies, expecting a sequel. And, since my reluctant reader demanded to read Twilight, and I’ve had several questions from parents, I am going to post my Vampire Fiction List.
